Necessity

There's something to be said for the old saying "necessity is the mother of invention". I recently changed ISPs and I needed to get my wireless network back up. None of my networking friends were available so I had two choices: put up with just one computer with internet access in a household that has four computers or figure it out myself. Not being the most patient of beings, I googled the information I needed and tried it myself. I was more suprised than anyone when it actually worked.

The last time this happened was a few years ago when I bought a new computer. At that time I was still new enough to computers that I was afraid to touch any of the hardware for fear of crashing something. So here was my brand new computer, sitting on my desk, fresh out of its package, cords and cables still in their plastic. My computer wizard friend, who was always available to bail me out of every kind of computer mishap for the extremely reasonable price of a homemade dinner, suddenly found a new priority in life. Namely, a girlfriend. So, again, I had two choices: wait for my friend to return my call (which might take days) or put my computer together myself. I took a chance and started plugging things in myself, crossed my fingers and turned it on. Dealing with hardware was not as scarey as I thought. The fact that the hard drive crashed soon after was a coincidence . . . really.

Now I work in technical support and I've even been known to take my computer apart to evict the dust bunnies. So why rely on someone else to do my network? 'Cause I'm lazy, that's why!
